MIST softball tourney returns to Cleveland this weekend

by Curt Gage

Cleveland-The North Coast Athletic Association softball league is in its 27th year in Cleveland. Not long after the formation of the league, LGBT softball league leaders from Cleveland, Columbus, Detroit and Pittsburgh came up with the idea of staging an annual tourna-ment, held over Labor Day weekend, which would rotate between the four cities.

The Midwest Invitational Softball Tournament was one of the first LGBT softball tournaments in the country and remains the only traveling tournament. Today the tournament rotates between Cleveland, Columbus and Detroit, with Cincinnati set to join the rotation by hosting next year's event.

MIST was last held in Cleveland in 2005 and returns this year.

The early years saw only the founding cities sending teams to compete against each other. As word of the tournament spread,

Midwest Invitational Softball Tournament

combined with the growing popularity of LGBT sports organizations, MIST began to draw teams from other Midwestern cities and even-tually gained not only a national, but an international presence.

For the 24th MIST this year, a record 36 teams are playing. They hail from Charlotte, Chicago, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Colum-

bus, Detroit, Knoxville, Madison, Nashville, Pittsburgh, St. Louis and Toronto. This translates into approximately 550 softball players and their guests descending on Cleveland for the Labor Day weekend.

The Cleveland MIST Committee and scores of volunteers put on a well-organized, competitive, and fun-filled weekend. The Cleveland contingent always goes out of their way to make sure the players are not only entertained on the fields, but off the fields as well.

The MIST weekend in Cleveland starts with the registration party on Friday evening at the host hotel, the Cleveland Airport Marriott. Saturday morning and afternoon are spent playing ball followed by a cookout at Twist and later a dance party at Bounce. Sunday brings the championship rounds of the tournament.

The Cleveland MIST tradition concludes with a dance and party cruise aboard the Goodtime III. The public is invited to join the cruise as well. Ticket sales are at various locations listed on the MIST Cleveland web site at www.mist08cleveland.com.

Ticket sales will also be held at the dock in Voinovich Park from approximately 8 pm until 9 pm on Sunday, August 31. Boarding is at 8:30 pm and we set sail at 9 pm. The weekend festivities conclude with the official MIST 08 Cleveland closing party at Union/Bounce.

The games will be held at Cleveland's Gordon Park, at East 72nd and Interstate 90; Brookside Park off Ridge Road near I-71, and at Clark Fields in Tremont. Come on out and watch us play.
